June 6 - "The Stewardship of Opportunity"
Pastor Tommy McDearis

This Sunday Todd and I will begin a four week series of sermons entitled The Stewardship of Life.   Our hope is to create a reminder that stewardship touches and involves every part of our existence on earth.  In the words of pastor, author, life-coach and businessman, Kirk Nowery, "True Christian stewardship demands wise management of all we are and all we have ... for life is a journey, a trek through time toward an eternal destination.  And whether the road is rough or smooth, the stewardship of life is a constant priority that, managed well, will lead to transformation and power."

This week I will begin this series by focusing on The Stewardship of Opportunity.  This message will build around Judges 4:1-9, which is the opening chapter of the story of Deborah, one of the only females to ever lead the nation of Israel.  As a judge and prophet, Deborah was a wise and respected woman of amazing character.  She possessed a vision of the future and the wisdom to seize the opportunity God had placed before the Israelites even when her army chief of staff was fearful and hesitant.  From beginning to end, Deborah was a faithful steward of every aspect of her life, and this faithful stewardship of God's blessings led to an extraordinary period of peace, growth, unity and prosperity for God's Chosen People.

Next week Todd will follow with the second message in the series, The Stewardship of Devotion.  His message will concentrate on how our primary affections will determine how we manage our time, energies, and emotions, and even how we form our dreams for tomorrow.

First Lesson:  Ephesians 5:15-17

5:15: Look therefore carefully how ye walk, not as unwise, but as wise;
5:16:  redeeming the time, because the days are evil.
5:17: Wherefore be ye not foolish, but understand what the will of the Lord is.

Second Lesson: Luke 12:35-36
12:35: Let your loins be girded about, and your lamps burning;
12:36: and be ye yourselves like unto men looking for their lord, when he shall return from the marriage feast; that, when he cometh and knocketh, they may straightway open unto him.

The Message: Judges 4:1-9
4:1: And the children of Israel again did that which was evil in the sight of Jehovah, when Ehud was dead.
4:2: And Jehovah sold them into the hand of Jabin king of Canaan, that reigned in Hazor; the captain of whose host was Sisera, who dwelt in Harosheth of the Gentiles.
4:3: And the children of Israel cried unto Jehovah: for he had nine hundred chariots of iron; and twenty years he mightily oppressed the children of Israel.
4:4: Now Deborah, a prophetess, the wife of Lappidoth, she judged Israel at that time.
4:5: And she dwelt under the palm-tree of Deborah between Ramah and Beth-el in the hill-country of Ephraim: and the children of Israel came up to her for judgment.
4:6: And she sent and called Barak the son of Abinoam out of Kedesh-naphtali, and said unto him, Hath not Jehovah, the God of Israel, commanded, saying , Go and draw unto mount Tabor, and take with thee ten thousand men of the children of Naphtali and of the children of Zebulun?
4:7: And I will draw unto thee, to the river Kishon, Sisera, the captain of Jabin’s army, with his chariots and his multitude; and I will deliver him into thy hand.
4:8: And Barak said unto her, If thou wilt go with me, then I will go; but if thou wilt not go with me, I will not go.
4:9: And she said, I will surely go with thee: notwithstanding, the journey that thou takest shall not be for thine honor; for Jehovah will sell Sisera into the hand of a woman. And Deborah arose, and went with Barak to Kedesh.
